What causes Bursitis?

Irritation of the bursa occur due to many reasons. The most common causes for this painful condition include:

  • Overuse of a joint that causes repetitive minor impact on its bursa (e.g. moving a joint over and over in the same way over a short period of time)
  • Putting a joint in a position that causes pressing on the bursa for a long time (e.g. setting a join on a hard surface)
  • Sudden severe injury to the bursa (e.g. a cut in the skin nearby)
  • A normal aging process where tendons become less elastic and less capable of tolerating stress.
  • Different conditions of arthritis may be complicated with bursitis (e.g. gout or rheumatoid arthritis).
  • Spread of infection from a nearby structure (e.g. infection in joint fluid can cause infection in its nearby bursa

 At-risk jobs

People working in certain occupations or doing certain activities for long periods of time are at higher risks for developing bursitis than other occupations. Generally, long-term activities that involve repetitive motion or pressure on particular bursae increases your risk for pursuits. These activities include:

  • Carpet laying
  • Not warming up prior to exercising
  • Tile setting
  • Tennis
  • Carpentry
  • Gardening
  • Shoveling
  • Pitching
  • Painting
  • Incorrect posture at work or home
  • Playing a musical instrument.
  • Scrubbing
  • Throwing
  • Going up and down stairs
  • Skiing
  • Raking
  • Golfing

What are the symptoms of bursitis?

A patient with bursitis usually experiences pain, tenderness, or swallowing over the inflamed bursa, as well as trouble moving the joint. Other symptoms of more serious bursitis include fever and redness of the infected area.

Diagnosis of bursitis

Diagnosis of bursitis is based on presence of the characterizing symptoms and history of trauma to the bursa.

Needle-aspiration of the fluid of the infected bursa may be needed in order to determine whether antibiotics are required or not.

Imaging tests (most commonly ultrasound) may also be indicated.

Treatment of bursitis

Usually, supplements will be required for better management of bursitis, but the following tips can help you to some extent:

  • Try not to overuse the joint involved
  • Rest and protect the irritated area (e.g. wearing arm sling or using a thick heel pad)
  • Avoid triggering movements (e.g. avoid kneeling in case of knee bursitis, or lifting heavy objects in case of shoulder bursitis)
  • Application of ice and heat alternatively to the painful bursa
  • NSAIDs (e.g. ibuprofen)

To find bursitis pain relief, bursa-regenerating supplements for treating bursitis include:

  • Glucosamine: this is a precursor of joint and bursa’s fluids. It also useful for joint paint
  • Chondroitin: enhances shock absorption by collagen, reduces inflammation, improves joint function, and alleviates pain
  • MSM: decreases inflammation and pain threshold, raises immunity, and increases energy levels
  • Eucalyptus: boosts immunity and improves the healing process
